Dress rehearsal birthday cake:

Layla has been asking me since yesterday to make a cake.  Mostly, I think she just knows that frosting goes with cake--and boy does she love frosting.  Today, when I told her it was Finn's birthday, she could not let the idea of making a cake IMMEDIATELY go, so we made a cake.  (Side-note:  I feel like making Finn's birthday cake this year has been a comedy of errors for me.  It's easier for me to make a dairy-free cake with boxed mixes and pre-made frosting, so that's how I usually go.  However, this morning I realized I had 4 cake mixes and only 5 eggs.  Each box requires 3 eggs.  Sigh.  So, I took ONE box of cake mix, split it into an 8-inch and a 6-in spring form pan, and crossed my fingers.  It worked fine, but they were rather...small and pathetic looking.)  I should have known that simply SEEING a made cake would not be enough for her.  We needed to EAT one too.  :)  So, I took the top tier, the 6-inch one, and frosted it.

I printed off a "2" from the computer, then cut and placed it on top of the cake, then added some sprinkles.

I was underwhelmed with that final look.  I would for sure go bigger and fatter next time, with the font and size of the 2.  It needs more definition around the edges.

Then Layla and Finn "helped" by putting M&Ms all over the cake.  ;)
Yes, Finn is still wearing his PJs at 11:30 a.m. on Friday morning.  Frankly, so am I.  All motivation to get dressed leaves when you see 8 inches of snow outside and know you're doing going ANYWHERE today.  ;)  Layla, however, freaks.OUT. if she can't get dressed the moment she wakes up.  Today is day 7 wearing the exact.same.outfit in a row.  Mercy, mercy me.  These children.  They make me smile.  :)  But seriously, I need to wash that dress now!

The smushed final product.  I love it.  :)  Pinterest, here we come, baby!

This is Layla singing to Finn.

Finn used to be able to blow out candles from 6 feet away.  Deadly aim.  Now he just makes a silly noise with pursed lips and spits, with a little bit of air forced out too.  It get the job done...eventually.  ;)

He LOVES fire.  :)

You can see them both singing here.  :)

The moment of success.

Layla didn't mind digging right in.

...20 minutes later we are still lighting and blowing out candles.

MORE FIRE!  MORE FIRE!!!!!!

Clapping along to the 2nd, faster Happy Birthday song...

Going in for the leftovers...

Then he just got greedy...
