Baby Berube!! :)

This is Andrea at 21 weeks pregnant.  I know, right???? :)

Note Finn's signature.  It's a logo, really, not a signature.  He knows how to write it all in a straight line and he chooses to do this instead.  I kind of love it.

Cora was waiting for a hug from Henry, but she didn't consider his arms loosely around her neck a hug, so she kept waiting...

Greg found the color...blue!  A baby boy Berube is due July 4th!

We skyped in Uncle Eric so the whole family could do this together.  :)

God

*Mostly posting this just so I don't forget the specifics, for "baby book" purposes...

As I said in my previous post, Finn and Layla have been talking about God quite a bit these days.  At night, when they are all tucked into bed, that is when all their deep thoughts come out.  I so, so treasure those long conversations I have with them before they fall asleep.

Lately, Layla has been quite frustrated that she can't see God with her eyes.  She knows she can see God when she goes to heaven, but she does NOT want to die just to be able to see God in heaven, so she is dealing with quite a bit of frustration lately about this issue.  And then we have to talk her down from worrying about dying and death, when she goes down this mental road.

Finn is also highly invested in seeing and hearing God.  He, however, thinks that the fact that God is "invisible" is rather like a super power, and he likes saying that a lot.  "God is INVISIBLE!!!"  About 3 weeks ago, Finn saw some sort of program that scared the every-loving daylights out of him.  He keeps mentioning random creatures to us, to confirm if they are real or not.  They are all imaginary, so we can sort of reassure him that God did NOT create them, and they don't exist, but it only does so much to help him not be fearful.

Layla is also a bit worried about animals, but all of the animals she is worried about are real:  wolves, bears, etc.  She wants to talk a LOT about what they eat, and what would happen if we ran into them outside, etc.

So, all of this worry and fear floating around at night has brought up even MORE talk about God these days.  :)

Last Thursday night, on February 11th, Jonas was putting Cora to sleep and I was talking to both of the kids as they were snuggled together in Layla's bed.  They were both frustrated at God's seeming lack of accessibility, so I tried to be even more specific about how God interacts with us, and how we can feel him in our hearts and hear him in our minds (sometimes...sigh...these are kind of tricky talks with kids!  I told Finn to ask Grandpa all of his questions next time Grandpa drives Finn to preschool...) if God is living in us.  They wanted to know how God could live in us, so I told them we just have to ask him to live in our hearts, and tell him that we want to hear him and listen to what he has to say.  Finn IMMEDIATELY prayed out loud, without any prompting from me.  Cutest thing even.  I wish I could remember his words, but as it was almost a week ago I can't exactly.  It was very simple, and something like "God, please come live in my heart," or along those lines.  Layla wanted me to show her how to pray, so I lead her in another simple prayer too.

So...did that just happen??? :)  Finn said he could feel God inside his heart, but Layla wasn't quite sure.  She wanted to know just how on earth God could live inside BOTH her and Finn, let alone everyone else in the world.  Explaining the Holy Spirit and the Trinity to a 4 and 6-year-old at bedtime...much harder than I anticipated, folks!!  Haha!  Again, I directed them to Grandpa.  Don't let me down, Grandpa!  ;)

As I left the room, part of me wanted to downplay what may have happened there...they are both little kids with incredibly limited knowledge of anything, let alone theology, but then I remembered my own life.  I clearly remember asking Jesus to live in my heart with my own Dad when I was 5 years old.  Clearly.  And I also remember being baptized when I was 7 years old.  Both of these events were completely genuine on my part, and not coerced by adults at all.

The faith of a child.  NOT to be underestimated or belittled at all, right???  Right.  Amen.

Layla and her cuteness lately:

Once I leave the kids room at night, they know they aren't allowed out of bed for any reason...OTHER than for going "poops or poddies," as Layla says.  So, she often takes advantage of that fact and goes to the bathroom about 5 minutes after lights out.  Lately, she's been taking an eeeeextra long time in there, and I finally realized what she was doing 3 nights ago:  she brings a pen with her and decorates the first square of toilet paper with a drawing for me.  It's just adorable.  The first one was a big smiley face, and I honestly thought Jonas had done it, but when I saw this second one 2 nights ago I knew it was my little artist-in-the-making.  She didn't say anything to me about it, either, until I asked her.  Love her. :)

Episode 2:

Skiing day 2

Jonas had work off on Monday, and it was the first warm day (33 degrees high) in ages, so he decided to take Finn skiing for a second time.  I took all 3 kids to Como Zoo, the free zoo near us, and then Jonas came and picked Finn up there as a surprise.  Super fun.  :)

Layla and Cora and I had our first "girls only" date out and ate lunch at the Como Cafe.  Cora, the entire time, sang "Amazing Grace" at the top of her lungs.  I'm pretty sure the rest of the patrons didn't know what she was singing, but it was adorable to me.  :)

So, Finn, being the cute guy he is, was pretty hilarious this time out.  He did really well, rarely fell, and there were out there for 5 hours straight hitting "the slope" (hahaha...oh, Como, you are your tiny hill...but perfect for a little kid to learn on for the first few times), so Finn slept GREAT that night.  Wow.  Anyway, Finn has been super into talking about God lately.  We discuss God every night before bed, and Finn is establishing some very strong theological beliefs, even if we try to convince him they might not be so accurate.  ;)

Today Finn had decided that he was "saved" at the end of every run:  either Papa saved him by helping him stop, or God saved him by letting Finn finish the run all on his own without falling down.

Clearly, Finn wanted to finish the run all on his own every time, so as they would be skiing down Finn would be yelling at Jonas at the top of his lungs "LET GOD SAVE ME!! LET GOD SAVE ME!!!"  Every.time.  Even if he would be heading straight for a tree, or a fence, he wanted Jonas to leave him alone and let God save him.   I still laugh just thinking about it.  (Extra funny bit:  there were a bunch of Somali people there learning how to ski for the first time as well, so they got to hear little old Finn yell about God as he flew past them...haha!)

Last Saturday...

Hoooooly teething, batman.
Actually, I should probably give a better explanation for her baaaad mood lately.  She is on a pretty high does of steroids for 5 days, and that was day 3 of them.  WOW.  The good news:  we have so far avoided going to the ER or Urgent Care with all three kids so far this round of croup.  The bad news: the higher dose of steroids the kids are on can have negative side effects, like MANIC emotions.  Ha.  So, yeah.  Layla and Finn have been fine, but Cora has been MANIC for days now.  Getting old, but hey, I don't care...I'd put up with manic emotions for days and days to save $5,000 (price, out of pocket, of our last round of croup in November).  Bad mama?  Maybe.  Poor mama?  Probably.  ;)

Finn wedged himself into a corner of the basement full of baby gear.  :)
Later on that day Jonas took all 3 kids on a few errands and ended up at the mall and the merry-go-round.  Cora came home VERY excited about riding the horses and saying "Merry go round!" over and over.  Just today she said it again, when we returned from dropping Layla off at school.  The child does NOT forget anything.

A glimpse into school for Layla today:

Today Layla got a visit from "Officer Friendly" at school.  :)  Remember that???

While Mama is away...

A few weeks ago Rachel Gustafson and I went out for lunch after church, so Dave and the kids came over to hang out with my gang at our house.  Turns out they had QUITE the good time doing dress up together, and the dress from Aunt Ruth at Christmas was a big hit again! :)

Finn's poses and smiles.  He kills me.  :)

Greg and Claire's birthday dinner:

Renee asked Finn to smile for the camera.  He then turned around and gave a straight-up Zoolander impersonation for 10 different poses.  I was dying.

This child:  "I do it MYSELF!"

Old pictures from Renee: New Years Eve:

For the past three years we've had a delightful tradition with the Horsmans to have a family sleepover at our home on New Years Eve.  It's so much fun.  I know, I know, I'm a total old lady...but let's be real, folks.  New Years Eve parties are rather lame once you're over 27.  :)  Family parties are the way.to.go.

So, we always have the Horsmans over for good food and a dance party where Jon and Jonas play for us all, and then the kids go to bed while the adults watch movies.  Simple.  Brilliant.

This year we didn't have everyone spend the night because our house is a bit more full these days, but we still did the PJs and party like normal.  (and this year we let the rest of my family in on the fun, too...)

Layla loves Anja so much.  She would probably call Anja her best friend.

Such JOY in dancing!!!

We put a slide inside Cora's room for the winter.  *genius*

Snow day!

Watching Papa use the snowblower is ENDLESS entertainment.  Going on a hour now.
Note:  It only takes 15 minutes to clear all our snow using the snowblower.  But Jones enjoys it so much, and is such a good guy, that he's basically clearing the walks and driveway of the entire block.  :)

Eating sausage while watching.

You can see Jonas clearing off his car in the background.

Lots of snow fell around here in the last 24 hours.  Does that cancel life for anyone?  Nope.  School is still on, despite 12-18 inches of snow, depending on where you are.  We Minnesotans don't let expected life events stop us at all!  ;)  It's winter?  Yes.  Does it snow in the winter?  Yes.  Okay, then.  Carry on!

Puzzles

Layla and Finn have discovered a new love for puzzles.  And, to add to the fun, they even work amazingly well together to do them.
