After doing Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial in the morning, we headed to Custer State Park in the afternoon. We saw endless American bison (it was baby bison season!), some deer, goats, and wild donkeys. The wild donkeys were likely the most memorable and hilarious part of the trip...
Turns out it's hard for everyone to stop taking pictures of bison!
I love her profile...
The wild donkeys were a hoot. They love people because they want SNACKS, and boy did the eat us out of every snack we had on hand. They are insistent and will basically get in the car with you if you let them. Kellan sat on my lap and fed them, and I laughed like a crazy lady the whole time. It was super fun.
These two bison were fighting, just a few yards away from the car, and it made Cora VERY nervous. She wanted to get away from them ASAP.
Kellan rode up on my lap when we were going super slow inside any park. He LOVED that.
This was driving along Needles Highway within Custer State Park...one of the most winding and lovely drives I have ever seen in my life.
This is around Sylvan Lake, at the end of Needles Highway, and still in Custer State Park. It's such a gorgeous lake to walk around and hang out by, but we didn't do much of that until our last day...
Because we were out every day, all day, Kellan took a nap in the car most day, usually for about an hour. He then stayed up later at night to enjoy more swimming. It worked well for us while traveling, but I'm glad to be back to home and no naps, where he goes to bed earlier AND seems to get more sleep in total (compared to napping days).
"Needles Eye" tunnel along the highway. Only one car can get through in any direction, obviously, so you have to take turns/play chicken. We got there just in time to see an over-confident camper driver. finally get their vehicle unstuck...so there was a bit of a backup to get through!
